5 IIITs to gain national importance under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Model i.e. the institution can grant IT degree to its students and will be an independent body to take decisions for course content, methods and practices in teaching.

The bill seeks to gain national importance for 5 IIITs set up in PPP(Public-Private Partnership) model

5 IIITs under PPP – Surat, Bhopal, Bhagalpur, Agartala, Raichur


Background Basics ()

There is lack of institutes which can grant degrees  in information technology sector.

The IIITs were established to promote higher education and research in Information Technology.

20 IIITs in PPP model have been approved by the Union Cabinet

Out of which Among them, 15 IIITs have been covered under the IIIT (PPP) Act

Remaining 5 institutes are currently registered as Societies under “the Societies Registration Act, 1860” and do not have the power to grant degrees or diplomas.

Once these institutions are declared of national importance, the five institutes will be granted the power to grant degrees.
